The fuschia (right) is well associated with West Cork, but the temperate climate provides the perfect conditions for a wide range of vibrant flora and fauna.

The Sheep’s Head Peninsula is well known for its scenic walking paths including the award winning Sheep’s Head Way walk, an 88km (55mile) circular walking route around the peninsula from Bantry to the headland and back, passing through the villages of Kilcrohane, Ahakista, and Durrus. The peninsula is also home to numerous shorter loop walks. The routes take in varied terrains including old boreens, open grassy and heathery moorland, field paths, quiet country roads and some short stretches of woodland paths, offering stunning views of the West Cork coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. For further details on the suggested routes please see the Links page.

The peninsula was also awarded the European EDEN Destination of Excellence in 2009. The award focuses on the sustainable nature of tourism in protected areas, highlighting the peninsula’s protected species of bird, namely the Chough and Peregrine as well as several protected plant species.
